Dr. Jeremy Lam, MD:

Have you ever been in a dangerous situation where you feel a rush of energy and alertness that makes you want to prepare to either fight or flee away from the situation? Perhaps you feel this more on the regular basis. And even when you aren't in a threatening situation. this feeling of alertness and of being on guard, and people say also wiredness can come about because of adrenaline rushes, which are really essential to keep you safe. But they can also become a problem when they become a reoccurrent and are happening without a good reason. The hormone that is actually responsible for this fight or flight response is adrenaline, or more officially known as epinephrine. Now, epinephrine is actually released by the adrenal medulla. And the adrenal glands are actually two organ systems. That's the two organ parts that sit on top of your kidneys. And they're your main anti stress organ system. And they're directly correlated and connected to the nervous system as well. So when you encounter a stress, and your body is deciding whether a fight or flight is going to be sending a system from the brain down to the adrenals, to say, Hey, let me put out more adrenaline or epinephrine. And when that is released, it's going to bind to receptors throughout the whole body, which is going to help increase energy production is going to help increase supply of oxygen to all your muscles so you can run away from the situation. This prepares your body in a way to really survive stressful and dangerous situations as well. So some things that happen to your body when epinephrine or adrenaline is released. is you have an increased heart rate. Sometimes you might have dizziness, a feeling of impending doom, increased blood pressure, feeling wired and tired, sweating hands, facial flushing, feeling anxious, or very jittery, and increased awareness. Now adrenaline is essential for survival in dangerous situations. It helps you to run faster to jump higher. we hear about those situations where, you know, people are able to do amazing feats, that that really are necessary to be able to rescue someone like someone who's able to lift a car up to be able to get someone who's in a car who's trapped under a car. And so this hormone is vital to the body and you can't live without it. But it can also be dangerous at high continuous levels. Now most hormones can be neutralized by other hormones as well allowing the body to return back to its baseline natural status, and homeostasis. This prevents one and other hormones from being dominant, but epinephrine and adrenaline is a hormone of last resort, and so the body really doesn't have any counters for it. This means that your adrenaline levels can rise unchecked and its effect on your bodies can be cannot be counteracted. adrenaline production works on a positive feedback loop as well. So the more you produce adrenaline in your body, that triggers more release of adrenaline as well. So this is a very unstable situation that can lead to dangerous high levels of a cycle of adrenaline in your body. Now, adrenaline rushes can actually happen quite commonly in adrenal fatigue. This is a disorder. This is a Adrenal Fatigue is occurs when you're in long term stress situations and your adrenal glands are struggling to produce cortisol, which is your main anti stress hormone to cope to cope with stress. We know adrenal glands start to struggle to produce enough cortisol, then your body will produce adrenaline instead. Symptoms of adrenaline rushes don't come right away. They don't come all at once either, but they occur gradually with mild and occasional symptoms at first and then worsen over time, if you don't do something about the underlying issue here. And eventually the symptoms can become very severe and debilitating. So what can you do for this issue? Well, you need to work on lowering your stress level and helping to restore adrenal function so that your body can heal. And you can do that by doing a few things. getting plenty of sleep is very important because that's when your body rests and recuperates. doing regular light to moderate exercises. If your body can handle it. Changing your diet to make sure you're eating whole, fresh and minimally processed foods, foods that are anti inflammatory foods that don't cause more stress in your body. avoiding stimulants such as sugarm caffeine. doing breathing exercises to encourage the activation of your body's parasympathetic system to help to help balance out the sympathetic nervous system as well. Spending a few times minutes in the sun every day and restoring your vitamin D levels. Talking to your doctor to take supplements such as GABA, Valerian Root, Elfine, and magnesium to help calm your body down. identifying sources of stress in your life and try to minimize or eliminate them. avoiding supplements, herbs, as well as medications that act as stimulants.
