A guide to intermittent fasting for women. Have you heard about intermittent fasting? It's the latest craze in health at the moment, and everyone seems to be doing it. Intermittent fasting means that you eat between specific time periods in the day, and you refrain from eating the rest of the time. This pattern is performed at different intervals, depending on which diet you try. Intermittent Fasting is said to be good for weight loss, and studies have shown that it may also increase longevity, decrease inflammation, improve metabolic health and reduce your risk of cardiovascular disease. It may also increase cognitive function and decrease the effects of aging, helping women stave off these lines and wrinkles and help to protect the body against free radical damage. For women who are menopausal, intermittent fasting may help reduce menopausal symptoms, boost your weight loss efforts, stabilize your fasting glucose levels, and increase insulin sensitivity, and may also help protect your neurons from age related deterioration. Despite these benefits, women should be cautious, especially more cautious than men when trying intermittent fasting because of the way the female body works. A woman's body is obviously different than a man's and may respond differently to intermittent fasting. There are also individual differences which is why you need to listen to your body and not try to force it to adopt a lifestyle that causes negative effects. Intermittent fasting has great potential to cause a variety of unique reactions in the female body. And here are some of the issues that intermittent fasting can cause or worsen in females. Stress. Stress is one of the biggest complaints and how it affects in this modern world and affects every aspect of your physical and mental health and contributes to everything from chronic diseases to low immunity. Intermittent fasting involves changing your eating habits, and going long periods without eating. This can be a huge cause of stress, which can actually worsen any stress that you're already experiencing. Estrogen dominance. Estrogen is one of the most important hormones in the female reproductive system. Your lifestyle and environmental health can have a huge impact on your estrogen levels, causing imbalances and other hormones as well as serious health issues. And estrogen imbalance can cause weight gain, low energy levels, muscle loss, poor cardiovascular health, brutal bones, infertility and poor blood glucose control. So intermittent fasting can impact the levels of all hormones in your body. And this includes estrogen and cortisol, otherwise known as the stress hormone. Intermittent fasting can also affect fertility. Female fertility is dependent on hormones, particularly estrogen and GnRH levels. GnRH or gonadotropin releasing hormone prompts the release of other hormones that triggers estrogen and progesterone levels. This encourages the ovaries to release a mature egg for fertilization, and prepares your body to support a pregnancy. Intermittent fasting can easily disturb your GnRH production, which may severely lower your chances of conceiving a child. So if you're still determined to do intermittent fasting, here are tips on how to do it safely. Make sure you eat healthy, nutritious foods during your eating window. Avoid sugary and salty foods. Start slowly with 12 hour fasts and then building up to longer fasts. If that's what you plan to do. Adopt a moderate exercise regimen. Do workouts on nonfasting days when you're starting out and take time off in between your fasts to let your body recuperate. Definitely don't fast when you're menstruating, as that could be also an extra added stress to your body. You also shouldn't fast if you have an eating disorder, you're breastfeeding, if you have irregular sleep patterns, you're pregnant, or if you want to get pregnant. Definitely talk to your doctor if you have concerns about any of these health conditions or about fasting and don't fast if you notice any negative symptoms or health problems that came from it.
